VocaLady Magazine is proud to congratulate our editor-in-chief and co-founder, Chelsea, for receiving the Hearst Scholarship from the New York Women in Communications Foundation. She, along with 22 other recipients, will be honored on April 25th in New York City at the annual Matrix Awards. The event will be emceed by Andy Cohen and will feature notable women in the communications industry such as Lena Dunham, Katie Couric, Gloria Steinem, Liz Kaplow and more.

The New York Women in Communications Foundation writes on their website that they are “the largest [communications foundation] providing support to women studying communications in the NY-NJ-PA-CT region. Annual scholarships range from $2,500 to $10,000 and are given to women based on academic excellence, financial need, community service and a demonstrated interest and involvement in communications. Since the Foundation’s formal establishment in 2000, it has issued over $1 million in scholarship support.”

Receiving a scholarship automatically makes the recipient a one-year member of New York Women in Communications, Inc., where they have the opportunity to attend events, meet other women in the field of communications, network, and develop their professional skills. As the website says, New York Women in Communications, Inc., “empowers women in all communications disciplines at all stages of their careers to reach their full potential by promoting their professional growth and inspiring them to achieve and share their successes in the rapidly changing world of communications.”

After finding the scholarship online in her sophomore year, Chelsea completed an initial application, obtained two letters of recommendation, and interviewed both over-the-phone and before a panel in New York City. She’s ecstatic to join a class of phenomenal young women and get the chance to take part in this organization, knowing that this scholarship will benefit her in many ways, including allowing her to continue her education in Washington, D.C. as well as network and learn more about the communications industry.

We are excited for her to share her experience with our readers and the VocaLady staff. We encourage young women in communications living in NY, NJ, PA or CT to look into this organization as well as refer to our college resources page to see other scholarship opportunities!
