Look no further for your next DIY project! You can now turn childhood nostalgia into a modern day fashion statement by recycling old crayons and turning them into homemade lipstick.
This project will help you tap into your creative side while also offering an alternative to all the overwhelming makeup brands. You can also pick from hundreds of unique shades and colors that cannot be found in stores. If none of the original colors are catching your eye, then you can even mix two differently colored crayons to make something entirely new! If you’re looking for a perfect shade to complete an outfit, the final element of a cosplay, or a lipstick for a night out then this project is for you!
The whole process is very quick and takes under ten minutes to mix all of the ingredients. This means that you can quickly complete a look the next time you are running late but need a little something to make your outfit pop. Once you have the ingredients and recipe down, you’ll be able to do this quick and easy project any time!
Some of you may be wondering: Is this project safe? Well the answer is… Yes! Crayola makes their crayons with wax and non-toxic pigments because they assume that children will be tempted to eat them. If a toddler were to eat an entire box of crayons, they wouldn’t suffer from anything more serious than a stomach ache.
There are many different recipes for this, but here is one that has simple ingredients and has worked the best for me:
What You’ll Need
- A box of Crayola crayons
- Coconut oil
- Vegetable oil
- Glass bowl
- Butter knife
- Paper towels
- Pot holders
- Contact case (or other small container)
Now that you have all your ingredients, it’s time to put it all together!
Pour four inches of water into a pan and bring this to a boil
While you’re waiting for the water to boil, pick a crayon! Choose your favorite shade and put the rest aside. Once you have your crayon, peal off the wrapper (Tip: hold the crayon under warm water for 30 seconds and the wrapper should come right off)
Using a butter knife, carefully chop up the crayon into several smaller pieces. This way the crayon will melt faster!
Put the freshly cut crayon into your glass bowl. Then, add 1/2 teaspoon of Coconut Oil and 1/4 teaspoon of Vegetable Oil.
When your water is boiling, place the glass bowl into the pan. Stir carefully until the crayons are completely melted.
Once everything is melted, carefully take the bowl out of the water and pour it into a mold. This can be any kind of small container that happens to be lying around the house. I used an empty contact lens case!
The hard part is over! Now, just place the container into the fridge and wait an hour for your new lipstick to harden
Wear your new lipstick with pride! You look fabulous!
