The Best and Worst of the Golden Globes

Last Sunday, the 73rd annual Golden Globes aired on NBC. Like any awards show, it had its fair share of highs and lows. From controversial host Ricky Gervais to calling out racism in Hollywood, it was definitely a night to remember. Here are some of the best and worst moments from the Golden Globes:

America Ferrara and Eva Longoria

While presenting a Golden Globe, America Ferrara and Eva Longoria poked fun at how people see those of other races as all looking the same. In a tweet by the Golden Globes, Ferrara was mistaken as Gina Rodriguez when she was on stage at the Golden Globe nominations that took place in December. So, she decided to poke fun at this at the actual awards ceremony:

You go girls!

Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence

Let’s face it, we all want to be JLaw and ASchu’s bff. They presented clips from their movies Trainwreck and Joy, which were both nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (both of their films lost to The Martian but Lawrence did win Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy). The pair were hilarious. If Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are unavailable to host next year, these bff’s can take their place.

Taraji P. Henson

The Empire star, who plays Cookie Lyon, won the award for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama”. As she was walking up to accept her award she decided to pass out cookies. Let’s face it, who doesn’t like cookies and puns?

Inside Out

I’m sure Joy was ecstatic to learn that Inside Out won “Best Motion Picture – Animated”. Pixar’s other film, The Good Dinosaur, was also nominated, but alas, dinosaurs can’t beat our favorite emotions. This film really opened up the conversation about mental health and depression. To have this type of film be so popular and well received by audiences is amazing. The film was great and let’s face it, we all cried when Bing Bong died.

Ricky Gervais Monologue

Gervais has hosted the Golden Globes four times now, so we had some idea of what his humor would bring to the show. Gervais enjoys poking fun at people and events that happened during the year. However, he went a little bit far this year and people were not happy. First, he poked fun at the wage gap in Hollywood:

He also took a stab at Caitlyn Jenner:

Yes some of his jokes were inappropriate in unnecessary. Some felt he was just doing his job of being a comedian and was funny. I’ll let you decide.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga

If you have been on the internet recently, you have probably seen the look Leonardo DiCaprio gave Lady Gaga as she was walking to the stage to accept her award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television. She brushed up against Leonardo DiCaprio’s arm, resulting in the infamous Leo look. It seemed like the look was a little rude, but Leo meant no harm.

Lack of Women

Where were our ladies at? Most of the categories had little to no female nominees in categories outside of acting. I know Hollywood is famous for not having female directors, but seriously, this needs to change. It is 2016! Why aren’t females being nominated for their roles behind the camera? I hope 2017 will have a lot more female nominees.
