Have You Met Kimmy Schmidt?

Do you have Netflix? Are you looking for another TV series to binge watch for Thanksgiving break? Do you like strong female protagonists, optimism and getting through things 10 seconds at a time?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider watching one of the new TV shows premiering on Netflix! Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt tells the story of Kimmy herself, having just been freed after 15 years of captivity by a doomsday cult leader in a small town in Indiana. In the midst of a media whirlwind, Kimmy must decide what to do with her life. Should she stay in her hometown and play the part of the victim? Instead, she decides to pursue her childhood dreams and stay in New York. The series focuses on the misadventures of Kimmy as she tries to find a career, make friends, get an education, and adjust to life in 2015. Just in case you’re not convinced, here’s more reasons to watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, available on Netflix!

Kimmy’s character, along with the hilarious plot and premise, were written by Tina Fey!

Along with Robert Carlock, Tina Fey came up with the idea of Kimmy Schmidt, played by Ellie Kemper. Tina Fey has a tradition of writing strong roles for women, and did not disappoint with Kimmy. She’s proven to be an incredibly well-rounded character.

She’s always an optimist!

Kimmy always does her best to apply her optimist philosophy of the world to the hustle and bustle of New York around her…even if it’s just a philosophy she came up with in middle school. Being the victim of an abusive cult leader, however, won’t dampen Kimmy’s spirit. Instead, we get to watch Kimmy learn from her mistakes, survive the trauma she lived through, and thrive in her new setting!

Kimmy always looks out for her friends!

Whether it be the women that Kimmy was held captive with, or the friends she’s making as an adult in New York, Kimmy always knows how to help a situation and fix problems. Even better, her friends are always willing to reciprocate Kimmy’s kindness, and often in the most hilarious way possible.

She has the best comebacks!

Kimmy promotes body positivity!

Throughout the series, Kimmy never bashes her own appearance or that of other women. She always advocates for promoting other women, instead of competing against them. While this makes for a great character, it’s even better as a lesson to learn from someone like Kimmy.

She believes in the power of education!

Even though it’s always hard for adults to go back to school, Kimmy shows us that it’s never too late to get the degree of your dreams.

Kimmy shows us how to be strong in the face of trauma.

It’s terrifying to imagine facing your abuser again, after years of trauma and suffering because of them. But if Kimmy’s behavior and composure during the series shows us anything, it’s that no one can make us victims. Kimmy proves that females really are strong as hell.
