It’s no secret to most of us that the government wants to defund Planned Parenthood for the sole reason for the fact that part of the money, no matter how small, goes to abortions. Right wing, old white men, who never have the chance to even have an abortion, are the ones opposing this. But if they want to defund Planned Parenthood because of the evils it does, maybe they should think about defunding some other evil things that are funded by the American government.
Apparently, $80 million were spent on developing a real life Iron Man suit by the government. Now, I know I love Iron Man just as much as the next nerd, but if it came down to deciding whether or not women could have an abortion as well as seek prenatal care for themselves and many other types of care, I would be funding that way more readily than an Iron Man suit. Women need to be able to live lives where they do not feel like if they become pregnant, it is the end all be all for their futures, careers, economic vitality, and perhaps even their lives.
The federal government has also given the University of California Irvine $3 million to research World Of Warcraft. As a non gamer, it’s a pretty cool game, but at the same time, I cannot bring myself to be okay with doing research on a video game that, if determined to be detrimental, could simply be banned when there are women who are facing not being able to have adequate access to healthcare for themselves.
The federal government may have done those things that all of us with jobs can get together and fume over as we look out of what comes out of our already miniscule paychecks, but there are other evils we should all fear much more readily. The government spends millions of dollars annually on war when really, it would be more profitable as well as better for humanity if this were spent on educating American students in different languages as well as teaching acceptance of cultural differences and constructive ways of problem solving. The government spends a significant portion of its funds also on bailing out corporations as well, but failing to help the people who work for them regarding their finances as well.
At the end of the day, I always feel a little sick when I think about what the government spends the money I am forced to give them after toiling day and night on. I think about the assignments I make and grade, the articles I write, and the research I do that yields money they snatch from me and do with it what they please. I stand with Planned Parenthood. I wish my tax dollars would stand with them as well.
