Get Into the Swing of Things: 4 Ways To Quickly Prepare to Go Back To College

Summer, for many of us, has been long and relaxing. Others may have spent the summer in school, working, or interning somewhere. Either way, with school quickly approaching once again, it is important to get back into the swing of things. Besides entering the school mindset once more, it is important to keep yourself organized. Here are 4 ways to quickly make this last week the best it can be and to help you prepare to go back to college! 

  • Pack with a checklist!

The first part seems absolutely obvious, right? Put all of your stuff in your boxes and put them in a car, on a plane, or on a train, and get back to school. But if you take a few short minutes to make a list, you will be able to pack much more quickly. You are less likely to forget your things if you have made a checklist, and it will be much easier for you to also spend time with friends and family you will be leaving if you have a checklist.

  • Clean your room.

This one is always tough for me, but it helps if you clean wherever you were living before you go back to school in the fall. I know I have been struggling with it. A great way to make sure that your room is clean is to do it in steps. Pick one spot and clean it then stop and go back later. This will reserve energy for you. But, if you have trouble going back and finishing things like I do, making a to do list and putting the cleaning on it, or just doing it all in one big day, is your best bet. Cleaning your room allows you to be able to come back in a few months or weeks, depending on how close you live to campus, to a clean room.

  • Conclude any of your summer activities.

With classes, internships, lab work, and whatever else you find yourself doing over the summer, it is necessary to wrap that up before going back to school. 3 weeks before school ago, I emailed my supervisor and told her I would be concluding my internship the day before my classes start. This will keep people from getting angry with you and allow you to regain a sense of balance now that you’re doing something different and going back to school.

  • Make a list of your favorite things you’re going to be doing this school year.

This one seems a bit silly, but it can be very hard to go back to school for many people. Getting back into the swing of things can be so much easier if you have something to look forward to. I’m not a very social person, so I don’t ever get that warm feeling in my pericardial area when I think about going back to school to see my friends. However, my heart practically melts when I think about getting back into the lab, talking with professors, and getting that internship I really wanted! Moving away from your family once again can be hard. Looking forward to those new things can make it easier!
